10 Questions with Torrey Foster

Torrey Foster is the Vice Chairman in Consumer CEO and Board Practices at Korn Ferry, a consulting firm based in Los Angeles, bringing more than two decades of executive search and leadership advisory experience. Torrey has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and the Chicago Tribune. He has served with numerous civic, church, and philanthropic organizations and currently serves on The Salvation Army’s National Advisory Board.

1. Tell us about yourself and your career.

I am a Vice Chairman at Korn Ferry. Most of my career has been in recruiting and advising CEOs and Boards.

2. How did you first become involved with The Salvation Army?

I joined the National Advisory Board in 2018 and today lead the Nominating Committee, and serve as a member of the Executive Committee also.

3. What do you most appreciate about The Salvation Army ministry?

The true expression of our Christian faith in living color—helping and loving our neighbors in the name of Christ.

4. Who is your most admired leader and why?

President Eisenhower because he was a war hero, president, and patriot. He was a true leader in every measure.

5. What initiative(s) from the National Advisory Board are you most excited about and why?

I am excited about our leadership and committee engagement with NHQ and the territories.

6. What should The Salvation Army expect of advisory board members at a local level?

Advisory board members care deeply about the Army and can be great resources at the local level.  

7. Likewise, what is your expectation for officers that work with advisory board members?

Expect more and ask for advice, counsel, and assistance.

8. What do you view as the greatest challenge and opportunity for The Salvation Army?

I think it’s those who rebel against the forces of good and are constantly looking for ways to smear and undermine the Army, and yet they give us the opportunity to address those points of attack with Truth.

9. How does faith influence your career and community volunteer work?

I believe God has put me where I am for a reason and that every leader I come in contact with is an opportunity to advance the Kingdom.
